Year One: Drawing & Painting
I was in a drawing and painting class for 12 weeks, and throughout those twelve weeks, the class was assigned multiple projects. Some were sketches using graphite or colored pencils, while others were paintings trying out acrylic or watercolor paints. Below is my favorite artwork from my sophomore year.
The picture on the far right is my first project. It was a self portrait of my hand. As it always is with art class, I was allowed to get creative, so I incorporated one of my favorite quotes into it, "And these three remain, faith, hope, and love; but the greatest of these is love." I thought it fitting. Instead of leaving the sketch completely grey graphite, I used a red oil pastel to give it a pop of color.
The picture in the middle was my first attempt at drawing a subject sitting in front of me. I think it was fairly successful, but could be worked on. I like the realism of the boots and jeans, but I wish I could've spent more time working on the texture of the hair.
The picture on the left was another project I got to work on. Mrs. Yeagley (my talented teacher) us asked to take pieces from magazines and incorporate them into our drawing. We could cut out circles, tear chunks, or slice thin strips of the magazine, as long as we drew the rest of the picture. I chose to use strips of the magazine, and my goal was to realistically replicate the rest of the image. For that particular project, I used a combination of colored pencils and oil pastels.

This project was the deciding factor for me to pursue more experience and classes in the art world. I was only allowed to use white, black, red, yellow, and blue paint. For every other color and shade, we had to mix the primary colors. It gave me a whole new perspective on how colors relate to each other, how they flow together, and how much black and white influence colors. It was done on canvas with acrylic paints while looking at an example picture.
Though this picture doesn't look like much, it was my final project for the class. In person, it looks like a much more realistic galaxy, which was my goal. On here, because of the flash of my camera, the colors look more flat, and the glitter stands out. Yes, glitter. I mixed glitter with glue and painted it over the canvas to give it a more mystic feel.
